Ashton suffer blow as Boorman injured

4:40pm Saturday 18th February 2012

AN injury to Peter Boorman made the difference as Ashton- under-Hill beat Dumbleton in the Worcestershire Cricket Board Indoor League.

Ashton made 121-2 in reply to Dumbleton’s 120-3 at Evesham’s Prince Henry’s High School.

The match between two of the unbeaten sides promised much but was spoilt to some extent by the injury to Boorman (18 not out).

Together with Matt Nicholson (35no), he opened for Dumbleton and set a run-rate of nine per over before, in trying to regain his ground, he injured his right leg and could take no further part.

Andy Powell (14) and Tom Green (25no) continued to score quickly but, after the former was run out, a flurry of wickets slowed the scoring.

In the end, a total of 120-3 was not as competitive as it should have been because Boorman could not field or bowl.

Dave Stokes, of Badsey, offered to act as sub for Dumbleton so they could have their full complement of fielders.

In spite of the early loss of Richard Cooper, Ashton were always up with the required rate of 10-per-over.

Will Archer (26no) and Jonny Cooper (27) batted well, showing how to score runs quickly without giving chances.

When they retired, Tom Archer (23) kept the runs flowing and, although he was out with the score at 100, Jack Murphy (10no) and Rich Nicholls (12no) took Ashton to victory with more than one over to spare.

Prince Henry’s (154-1) allround performance would prove too much for Badsey (74-4).

The school’s innings began with 17 from the first over and continued at a rate high enough to produce the highest score so far in this year’s competition.

Tom Pilling (43no) was the leader in the run-fest but he was ably supported by Jack Perks (28no), Alex Johnson (26no) and Mike Brown (26no).

The final three overs of the innings produced 56 runs and only Sam Attwood, with 26 off three overs, had a bowling return that any of the Badsey bowlers would want to see.

In reply, Badsey opened steadily with Dave Stokes (21) and Attwood (26no) but, by the time the former was out in the sixth over, the score had only reached 36.

From this point, the run-rate did not improve as none of the incoming batsman were able to score any quicker.

Brown bowled the penultimate over, conceding only one no-ball and taking two wickets.

Badsey’s innings fizzled out, giving Prince Henry’s their first win of the season.
