Update: M50 open westbound

THE M50 motorway's westbound carriageway has been re-opened following a crash between Ledbury and Tewkesbury earlier.

The incident occurred at about 8.30am between junctions one and two on the eastbound carriageway and fire crews from Ledbury and Upton were on the scene to deal with a fire involving LPG.

The accident was cleared from the westbound carriageway at about 12.45pm, while the eastbound carriageway is expected to remain closed until about 4pm.

As a precaution the eastbound and westbound carriageways have been closed between junctions one and two to allow the leaking gas to vent while firefighters used a water spray to assist the process.

Station Commander Adrian Thompson from HWFRS, said: “The incident was reported to us as a fire involving LPG but on arrival, we found that a tank of an LPG fuelled car had ruptured after being involved in a collision, and that there was a significant leak of LPG as a result of this.”

It is expected to be re-opened within an hour.
