Attempt to steal cash in Tewkesbury
8:00pm Monday 16th January 2012
POLICE are investigating after a device to steal peoples cash was put on an ATM in Tewkesbury.
Officers were contacted by a member of the public on Thursday, January 12, after an irregularity was spotted on the cash machine at Barclays Bank on the High Street.
On the machine a sticky strip was placed into the part of the machine that dispenses cash. It’s thought that the intention was for withdrawn notes to stick to this strip to be collected by the fraudster later.
It is not yet known if any money was stolen using the device but investigating officers are reminding the public of the importance of ensuring you have received the correct amount of money and also checking ATMs for irregularities.
Crime Prevention Officer for the county, Paul Francis, said: “There are some simple crime prevention measures that you can take to protect yourself from becoming a victim of this kind of fraud.
“The most important is to have a look at the machine before you insert your card. If you notice anything unusual about the cash machine, or there are signs it has been tampered with, do not use it and report it to the bank or the Police as soon as possible.”
If you have any information about either of these incidents please contact Gloucestershire Police by dialling 101 and quoting incident number 390 of January 12.
